Christian flees the City of Destruction with a burden on his back and walks to the Celestial City, through the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair, Doubting Castle and the river of death. Bunyan wrote it in Bedford gaol. For two centuries it was the book most English households owned after the Bible. This is Part One, the complete work Bunyan published in 1678; the marginal Scripture references are his own.
John Bunyan (1628-1688) was a Bedfordshire tinker who began preaching after his conversion and was imprisoned for twelve years for refusing to stop. He wrote much of his work in gaol, including Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners and the first part of The Pilgrim's Progress. He had almost no formal schooling, and his prose is built out of the cadences of the English Bible.
